One of the main attractions is actually the fort itself. The fort was built by General William S. Ellis in the mid-1800s as a defensive position for his force. During the Civil War, it was used to bombard Fort Wallace, which was left as a Federal supply base to reinforce the Northern army. Today, the ruins are considered historically significant because they were used as a recruiting point for the military.
